Arsene Wenger: "Congratulations to Chelsea, to Carlo Ancelotti and his players. He behaved very well the whole season. For us it was important to finish well and we did it. "We have gone beyond expectation, if you look at July, but of course we are still frustrated, because one month ago we were in touch with the championship, but did not win it. Overall we had a season with a good attitude and strong character, the team has improved a lot on that front, but overall we conceded too many goals to win the championship. "We did not have the players available in the last six weeks to fight for the championship. When you go into the final sprint, you need your squad available. We had too many injuries." Roy Hodgson: "I do not think it was difficult to keep the team which I selected focused, because many of them were very much really in need of a game and should have been looking to show what they can do. So I take the responsibility that to expect the players to come here and get a result was far too big an ask. I am actually quite satisfied with the way they went about things and kept battling against enormous odds. "Mark Schwarzer is blaming the pitch, saying it took a bobble, but nobody believes him! I am pleased to see he has got it out of his system because he has made so few this season, if any." Aston Villa 0-1 Blackburn Rovers Martin O’Neill: "It was a disappointing result, but I'm delighted we finished sixth. That was our aim this morning. I think we gave Hull a bit of help last year on the last day of the season, so I'm delighted they have reciprocated. "I'm disappointed with the result, but not with the season or our position." Sam Allardyce: "Arsenal 2-1 and Aston Villa 1-0 - it's a fantastic finish to the season for us and shows you the difference that a couple of wins makes. Instead of perhaps 14th in the table, which we would have been quite satisfied with, we have now beaten two of the big guns in the Premier League. "It will hopefully make a big difference to our budget in the summer." Bolton Wanderers 2-1 Birmingham City Owen Coyle: "It has been stop-start for Ivan Klasnic because of injuries but when he is fit I know what he brings to the team. If it is possible to do something financially then we will be in there pitching. It is not as black and white as saying, come on board. He is a player I like, he loves being at the club. I had a chat with him last week and I think you have seen from his performance today he wants to be here. "If the finance was right then I want to have him. He is a good player, a lovely guy. He is a character and the boys like him. You can never have enough goalscorers in your club. That is an area we need to be looking to improve." Alex McLeish: "We have been one of the lowest spenders in the league. To come from the Championship and finish ninth in the league is an amazing achievement. It feels like winning a cup. "We have got to prove ourselves again next season. The players have been outstanding and risen to almost every challenge we have given them this year. Although I thought we capable of staying in the league, we have punched above our weight." Burnley 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur Brian Laws: "It's a very nice feeling. We started very, very slowly and I was very disappointed (with the first goal) because it was a nothing ball over the top, Brian Jensen was way out of position and should have been sweeping that up. "You think, 'what have we got here'" The second goal was sheer quality but we regrouped and in the last 10-15 minutes of the first half we started to probe and pass the ball well and that was what I said at half-time, we had to pass the ball a bit quicker. When we move the ball we can open up and we did that in the second half. It was great credit to the players. They could have switched off but they didn't and they've given everybody a lift." Harry Redknapp: I'm bitterly disappointed. At 2-0 it wasn't even a game and you couldn't see any way we wouldn't go on and win the game comfortably. The crowd were getting edgy with them and it looked almost too easy. "But they got a goal back and in the second half they came out and they were excellent. They ran all over us at times, I thought they played fantastic, and we really were a shadow of ourselves. I've no excuses. A lot of the defending was poor." Everton 1-0 Portsmouth David Moyes: "I thought it was a stunning goal, out of the blue, out of nothing. It was a fantastic finish. We had just about run out of ideas and, to be fair, on the counter-attack they were a threat. "And they scored a goal - it was a goal. I thought ours was a goal last week [against Stoke] and theirs was a goal today." Avram Grant: "It is disappointing but typical. Again we scored a goal - I don't know why the decision was a disallowed goal because there were two players on the line. It is not the first time this has happened. "We defended well, had some good attacks and scored a goal, so we deserved to win. They scored a fantastic goal in the last moment but it was a good performance." Hull City 0-0 Liverpool Iain Dowie: "I'll have a discussion with the chairman sometime this week and we'll see. It is important the club's financial stability is assured as quickly as it can be because there has to be massive changes to the budget. That is exactly what I expected because that is what it said on the tin. I've enjoyed my time here but unfortunately we've come up short." Rafael Benitez: "It would never be easy to leave this club. Every day you can read something different. It has always been the same situation: I decided to come here because of the fans and the club. "I wanted to stay and I would like to stay if everything is fine. And if I stay I am not thinking about selling Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres - just in case 'senior sources' say different things. It is very clear. The chairman was clear, he doesn't want to sell. The manager is clear, just in case you see any exclusive interviews with senior sources." Manchester United 4-0 Stoke City Sir Alex Ferguson: "I am not going to agonise about where it went wrong. You could talk about a lot of things and the decision at Stamford Bridge was a bad one that turned the whole thing round. But you can't agonise over these things. Sometimes you get the breaks, on other occasions you don't. "The European Cup was the biggest disappointment. We should be in the final. But we applaud Chelsea winning the title and I applaud Carlo Ancelotti. We know how hard it is to win the league." Tony Pulis: "I have no complaints about the result. "Overall we have had a very good season. I was worried about the second season. But we have got more points and finished higher in the table." West Ham United 1-1 Manchester City Gianfranco Zola: "I played until I was 39 and never considered it as a job or a difficult thing to do. But this year, because of all the pressure around us, it was difficult to take it in the same way. Football has always been part of my life, always one of the main things. I need it. I need football in a certain way though. One of the people I admire most is Giovanni Trapattoni, he was in his 70s and joyful about the game. That is the way I want to be. "I enjoyed it last year, very much, this year a little bit less. I know where the faults and mistakes lie. I will be working on them. It was only my second year as a manager and you take in everything. I need to get used to it. "This week we will have a meeting with the club, we will talk and see what the outcome will be. Before I speak to the media I need to speak to the owners. We will have a long and interesting chat." Roberto Mancini: "I don't think (we can attract the top players). If we finished in the top four, it would be better and easier to attract them. In this situation it is different. There are probably some players who want to play in the Champions League and not in the Europa League. But there are a lot of players in Europe who will want to play for Manchester City next year. "It will be an important squad for us next season. We won't playing in the Champions League but we must try to win the other competition and finish in the top four in the Premier League. I think we are a good team but if we want to play for the top of the table we must improve. We now have time to buy some players and strengthen some positions." Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Sunderland Mick McCarthy: "Everyone was going to be happy whatever happened today but we wanted to finish with a flourish. It leaves a nice taste in the mouth and means we will not come back with any negative thoughts. "I think Sunderland started the game really well and we looked second best for a short while. They were probably the dominant team for 20 minutes but we dominated the second half and deserved the victory. "It was competitive and I was competitive (referring to touchline row with Sunderland ‘s bench). But we all had a beer afterwards and there were no problems at all." Steve Bruce: "I am totally and utterly gutted by this afternoon, totally disappointed by the way we have finished the season. I am not impressed by finishing 13th, because we are better than that. "Our start to the season was good, the middle was average and the end was decent. But we have to do much better away from home. It's as if we always need a home crowd, which is a disappointing thing." Eurosport |
