Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, this morning reported on the details of the first full face transplant in the world, which was held last March 20 by 30 professionals who were employed for 22 hours. The 11 previous transplants (France, Sevilla, Valencia, USA and China) had been partial.
The receiver's first full face transplant in the world, whose identity was not disclosed to protect her privacy, is a young man who suffered severe deformity in the face caused by trauma. This deformity prevented him from breathing through your nose and mouth, while caused him great difficulty in swallowing and speaking. The intention of the doctors is that "within weeks begin to speak and eat, and smile and laugh." This has been detailed during a press conference the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Burns, Dr. Joan Pere Barret, who has led a multidisciplinary team from the hospital in Barcelona. The patient, who received a transplant of all the skin and muscles of the face, nose, lips, upper jaw, all teeth, palate, cheekbones and jaw, resulting in plastic surgery reconstructive microsurgery of blood vessels, is now "fine and recovering well after surgery," explained Barrett. The procedure for obtaining donor tissue facial reconstruction ended with her face as a mask, a replica of his own face. The tissues obtained were placed in liquid preservation, a process identical to that of bodies waiting to be implemented. Those responsible for such a complex intervention have explained that the revascularization of the allograft in the face and the advent of whole blood is "basic to the success of the implant, a process that was successful." "It was noted that there was no hyperacute rejection and replaced the receiver the following structures: jaw, jaw, nose, cheeks, mucosa, muscles and nerves and finally the skin was sutured, the hospital sources have been completed. "The patient has scars on his forehead and neck, but in the future will be fully concealed," said Barrett, who recalled that the bones of the face must adapt now implanted cranial structure of the young. The coordinator of the operation has ensured that "the more implanted bone marrow, the more likely that the rejection is lower." "It is the face of another," insisted the doctor, who said there are differences on the three surgical interventions carried out earlier in Spain. 1 Comentario:
